Does Domain Age Affect SEO?
Domain age is one of the most debated factors in SEO. Google's John Mueller has stated that domain age is "not a factor" in their ranking algorithms. However, older domains often rank better β not because of their age directly, but because they've had more time to accumulate backlinks, content, brand recognition, and trust signals. Correlation doesn't equal causation when it comes to domain age and rankings.
Domain Authority vs Domain Age
Domain Authority (a Moz metric) and Domain Rating (an Ahrefs metric) measure a domain's backlink profile strength. These metrics correlate much more strongly with rankings than domain age alone. A 2-year-old domain with 500 quality backlinks will typically outrank a 15-year-old domain with 10 backlinks. Focus on building authority through quality content and natural link acquisition rather than simply waiting for your domain to age.
Aged Domains Marketplace
Some SEO practitioners buy expired or aged domains hoping to inherit their SEO value. While this can work, it carries risks. Google can detect when a domain changes ownership and may discount historical signals. Domains with spammy backlink histories can bring penalties. If buying an aged domain, thoroughly audit its backlink profile and check for Google penalties before purchase.
How to Read a WHOIS Record
A WHOIS record contains domain registration information: registrant name (often privacy-protected), registration date (creation date), expiry date, nameservers, and the registrar. The creation date tells you when the domain was first registered. The updated date shows the last modification. Note that WHOIS privacy services may hide some information, but dates are usually still visible.
Domain Registration Strategies
Some SEO professionals recommend registering domains for multiple years (5-10 years) as a trust signal to search engines. The theory is that spammers register domains for only one year. Google's Matt Cutts acknowledged this as a very minor factor. More importantly, ensure your domain doesn't expire accidentally β an expired domain can lose all its rankings and be snatched up by domain squatters.
