    What Are Week Numbers?

Week numbers provide a compact way to reference a specific week within a year. Instead of saying "the week of March 24-30," you say "Week 13." Week numbers are extensively used in European business for reporting, payroll, manufacturing schedules, and project management. They provide a consistent framework for weekly planning and communication across organizations and countries.

    ISO 8601 Week Numbering

ISO 8601 defines specific rules for week numbering: weeks start on Monday, and Week 1 is the first week of the year that contains a Thursday. This means January 1 might be in Week 52 or 53 of the previous year if it falls on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Most years have 52 weeks, but years starting on Thursday (or Wednesday in leap years) have 53 weeks.

    US vs European Convention

The US typically starts weeks on Sunday, while ISO standard and most of Europe start weeks on Monday. This means the same date can have different week numbers depending on the convention. Excel has two functions: WEEKNUM (US convention) and ISOWEEKNUM (ISO standard). When communicating internationally, always specify which convention you're using or use ISO week numbers for clarity.

    Week Numbers in Business

Manufacturing and logistics heavily rely on week numbers for production scheduling, delivery windows, and inventory management. "Ship in CW 15" (Calendar Week 15) is more precise than "mid-April." Payroll departments use week numbers for weekly payment cycles. Marketing teams plan campaigns by week number. Financial reporting often uses 4-4-5, 4-5-4, or 5-4-4 week patterns within quarters.

    53-Week Years

Most years have 52 complete weeks plus 1-2 extra days. When January 1 falls on a Thursday (or Wednesday in leap years), the year has 53 ISO weeks. This happens roughly every 5-6 years. Recent 53-week years include 2020 and 2026. The next one after that is 2032. 53-week years can complicate year-over-year comparisons in business reporting, requiring week-number-aware analysis rather than simple date-range comparison.
