What drives our rankings
Four Non-Negotiable Principles
No paid placements
No manufacturer, retailer, or affiliate network can pay to have a product included in, or moved up, any SmartSignify ranked list. Rankings are determined solely by our editorial assessment. We disclose all commercial relationships, including affiliate programs, in our Affiliate Disclosure.
Performance drives rank
The position a product holds in a ranked list reflects its composite score against our testing rubric — weighted by what matters most for the specific use case the list addresses. A "best budget" list weights value differently than a "best overall" list.
Ranked for real-world buyers
We rank products as if we are recommending them to a friend who is about to spend their money. That means accounting for real-world reliability, after-sales support quality, long-term firmware support, and price-to-performance — not just peak benchmark performance.
Lists are regularly updated
Ranked lists are reviewed and updated every 90 days, or sooner when a major new competitor launches, an existing product receives a significant update, or prices change materially. The update date on each list reflects the most recent revision.

What Each Rank Position Means
#1 — Top Pick
Best-in-class performance for the primary use case. The product most people in this category should buy without hesitation.
#2 — Runner-Up
Excellent alternative that comes close to the top pick. Often better for specific buyer profiles (e.g., lower price, better portability, ecosystem fit).
#3–#5 — Highly Recommended
Genuinely strong products with specific advantages. Ideal for buyers who have identified a particular need the top pick does not serve as well.
#6–#10 — Recommended
Good products that earn a place based on specific use cases, budget brackets, or feature sets. No filler entries — every product on our lists was tested and evaluated.

How We Select Products for Each List
- We begin with a broad market sweep to identify all products competing in the category
- Products are shortlisted based on market relevance, critical reception, and sales presence
- Shortlisted products are purchased and tested using our standardised review methodology
- Products are scored and ranked based on category-specific weighting of our 40-point rubric
- Rankings are peer-reviewed by a second editorial team member before publication
- Final list is reviewed for blind spots — particularly underrepresented price points and use cases
- Lists are published with full transparency about which products were tested and our scoring basis
Common Questions
How many products are tested for each Top 10 list?
This varies by category. For well-established categories like wireless headphones, we typically test 12–20 products to arrive at the final 10 recommendations. For newer or niche categories, we may test all available products in the market. The number of products tested is disclosed in each list.
Can a product be ranked without being physically tested?
No. Every product on a SmartSignify ranked list has been physically acquired and tested by our team. We do not include products based on manufacturer claims, third-party specifications, or press materials alone.
What happens if a product I bought based on your ranking has changed?
Products evolve after launch. If a significant firmware update, product revision, or market change affects our recommendation, we update the list. If a product you purchased has changed materially from our review, we encourage you to contact us — we track these situations.
Do you consider price drops when updating rankings?
Yes. A product that was ranked fourth at $400 may move to first at $250 if its score was already close and value was the differentiating factor. Price is a real variable in how we rank, and we track it.
