Understanding GPA Requirements

GPA requirements vary significantly by institution, program, and applicant pool. The data shown represents general admission standards for undergraduate programs.

What the numbers mean

  • Minimum GPA: The lowest GPA typically considered (though exceptions exist)
  • Average GPA: The middle 50% of admitted students
  • Competitive Range: The GPA range that gives you a strong chance of admission

Admission is holistic

GPA is just one factor. Universities also consider test scores, extracurricular activities, essays, letters of recommendation, course rigor, and special talents. A lower GPA can be offset by exceptional achievements in other areas.

Important considerations

  • • Competitive programs (engineering, pre-med, CS) often require higher GPAs than the university average
  • • Weighted vs. unweighted GPA matters — selective schools recalculate based on core academic courses
  • • International students may have different requirements based on their grading system
  • • Early Decision/Action applicants sometimes face higher GPA thresholds
  • • These are estimates based on publicly available data and may not reflect current year admissions

Data sources: GPA requirements compiled from university admissions data, Common Data Sets, and published statistics. Requirements change annually. Always check official university admissions websites for the most current information.
