Understanding High School GPA
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated by converting letter grades to a numerical scale, multiplying by course credits, and dividing by total credits.
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA: Calculated on a 4.0 scale where A = 4.0, regardless of course difficulty. This is the standard most colleges use for comparison.
Weighted GPA: Gives extra points for advanced courses (Honors, AP, IB). Can exceed 4.0. Shows course rigor but isn't universally used by colleges.
GPA Scale Used

What's a Good GPA?
- • 3.8-4.0: Excellent — competitive for top-tier universities
- • 3.5-3.7: Very good — strong for most selective colleges
- • 3.0-3.4: Good — solid for state schools and many private colleges
- • 2.5-2.9: Average — acceptable for most colleges
- • Below 2.5: May limit college options; consider community college pathway
